Dan and Lois Porta,

Lois’ Marketplace

Lois’ Natural Marketplace is a locally owned organic and natural products marketplace  in Scarborough, Maine. It offers an eco friendly and exciting natural foods shopping experience.

Opened in 1993, Lois’ Natural Marketplace is now  celebrating its 18th year of serving  Scarborough, as well as the greater Portland, Maine region.

The Marketplace enjoys a loyal following of local residents and summer visitors to the coast of Maine. Lois’ Marketplace has a national reputation with its customers and within the network of natural foods stores across the country. Lois’ is often first to bring new products to the public; several national brands of natural foods started out on the shelves of Lois’.

Lois’ Natural Marketplace offers hundreds of local and regional products, as well as other organic and top quality foods from around the world. Farm to market at Lois’ often means that the produce being delivered at the back door was picked that morning! Year round selection of seasonal and regional favorites from local Maine farms.

The owners are actively involved with the Marketplace. They bring over thirty years of passion for eating organically grown foods within a holistic diet. Their background in organic foods is rooted in the co-operative natural food movement of the 1970’s. They personally source many of the products in the store and recipes used in the award winning cafe-deli are family favorites.

Their mission for bringing organic foods to the local community has taken them to organic vineyards in Italy and Spain; the Costa Rican mountains to visit an organic ginger and turmeric farm as well as organic vineyards and farms back home in Maine. They have personally inspected facilities around the country for products that bear the Lois’ brand name.

Best Maine Vacations

Sean Lebida loves Maine. He was born in Bar Harbor and raised in the stunning Mid-Coast area, and there is nowhere he would rather live.  Five years ago, Sean and his wife had an idea: start a website showcasing our beautiful State and the wide variety of things to do here.

Best Maine Vacation started as a blog, and grew from there into a geographically-based insider’s guide to Maine.  Sean’s mission is to find and bring to light the unique places off the beaten trail, the spots that reveal what authentic Maine is really about.

One of his proudest moments was working with Gren Blackall to help found Maine Day, a holiday to celebrate everything about Maine. Through their efforts, and with the help of many others, they were able to get Governor LePage to proclaim the holiday, and we celebrated the first official Maine Day on August 16, 2014.

Sean currently resides in the town of Bowdoin with his wonderful wife and three energetic children.  Their children and businesses keep them busy but they always find time to get out and experience the awesome State of Maine!

Sean is also an avid photographer and his passion is landscape photography.  Best Maine Vacation has provided the opportunity to share some of his photos and encourage others to come and visit Maine.

He is the owner of New Leaf LLC, a family run building and heating company in Bowdoin, and his family runs Best Maine Vacation.

House in the Woods is a nonprofit organization offering outdoor programs to bring together small groups of active military, veterans, and their family members to relax, share, bond, and deal with the stress, loss, grief, and other emotions which can haunt the grieving soul.

We offer canoeing, kayaking, hiking, hunting, fishing, nature tours, campfires, swimming, wildlife identification and spotting, and other natural Eastern Maine resource “treasures” God has given our beautiful state to enjoy. As participants face the outdoor challenges presented by Mother Nature herself, they will have the opportunity to share laughter, memories, sorrow, service, and pride, among many other common bonds.

Paul and Dee House founded House in the Woods after their son, Sgt. Joel A. House, was killed by a roadside bomb while serving in the Army in Iraq.  Their vision for House in the Woods began shortly after attending the military memorial service at Fort Hood, TX for Joel and 19 other soldiers from his army base who died the same month as their son.  It was both emotionally overwhelming and comforting to be around so many families who were experiencing the same grief and loss.  They dreamed of creating a program using Maine’s outdoor resources that would help military families support one another.

Paul is a life-long Maine woodsman and Maine Master Guide. Dee is a former Navy “brat” who grew up in military housing and schools during the Vietnam War era.
